The New Hampshire Office of State Planning 1997 Project of the Year
Recognized by Inherit New Hampshire for Effective and Innovative Preservation

This project showcased the efficiency of adaptive-reuse with attendant preservation of the embodied energy in existing building stock. The Dartmouth Hitchcock and Littleton Regional Hospitals commissioned us to design a kidney dialysis facility and doctors’ offices on the site of two historic buildings on the town green. The State Office of Historic Preservation was concerned about the removal of the old buildings. Our solution was to lift the top two floors off the ruined first floor and store them while a new basement and first floor were constructed. Then the preserved floors were blended into the replicated first floors and joined to a new elevator tower. Our solution won the enthusiastic support of the Historic Preservation Division. The new building revitalized the village, preserved its heritage, and is providing modern, functional medical facilities for the Littleton Hospital and the North Country Regional Dialysis Center.
