The goal for this project was three-fold: to design a building that incorporated the old brick creamery building on the site and was energy efficient; to contribute to the streetscape; and to help the Onion River Coop grow its business. In order for this building to be sympathetic with downtown Burlington, designing a two story structure was a necessity. To justify this growth in program, Bast & Rood helped arrange for city government to occupy the offices on the second floor., thus creating a mixed-use building typical of the area.

The building uses natural daylighting, high efficiency refrigeration and a controlled 40% relative humidity strategy to significantly lower electrical costs. The building envelope offers insulation levels well above average.
